We analyzed the distribution of outer membrane (OM) attachment mechanisms across the whole tree of Bacteria, and we made a hypothesis on how gram-positives might have emerged. We tested it by perturbing OM tethering in the diderm Firmicute Veillonella. The results surprised us!
