Open Science is an important part of research and publishing. It's a very complex subject but often it is boiled down to open access, both in terms of data and publications.

However, the reality of Open Science is more complex than that. Making data available, doesn't necessarily make it open. It's quite possible that available data cannot be interpreted by anyone except the person who generated it.

By the same token, just because information or data is not free, doesn't mean that it is not open. Producing data and information is not without cost, so who should carry it in order to make science more open?

I think that Open Science is important but I realised that I am quite ignorant to the details and nuances of what is involved which is why I signed up for this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the European Project ORION.

The deadline for registration is Friday the 18th of October and the course begins on the 21st of October. Here is the syllabus if you are interested:

Week 1: Publishing & Open Access - Part I
Available from 21 Oct 2019, 08:00

Week 2: Publishing & Open Access - Part II
Available from 28 Oct 2019, 08:00

Week 3: Research Data Management
Available from 4 Nov 2019, 08:00

Week 4: FAIR & Open Data
Available from 11 Nov 2019, 08:00

Week 5: Science Communication & Public Engagement
Available from 18 Nov 2019, 08:00

Week 6: Reflection & Action

Please let me know if you sign up (comment or social media - @BenLibberton). I would be really interested in discussing this with people from the community.

Science Communicator, Freelance

I'm a freelance science communicator, formerly a Postdoc in the biofilm field. I'm interested in how bacteria cause disease and look to technology to produce novel tools to study and ultimately prevent infection.
