I am an MPH graduate in Field Epidemiology. I am particularly interested in the Epidemiology of health problems of public health importance specially Cancer which became the current major health problem of a developing country such as Ethiopia. My personal work outputs during the FETP residency period and post MPH research project have involved a combination of these subjects: investigating outbreaks , analyzing malaria surveillance data, evaluating surveillance system, describing health profile of the population, involvement in the Ebola Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (EVD) screening and surveillance, manuscript writing, project protocol preparation, etc.). Moreover, during my MPH defense I was honored with Excellent qualification and one of my study outputs 'Epidemiology of Malaria in Oromia Region' was presented in 8th TEPHINET Global Scientific Conference. Apart from this, I have previously conducted esophageal cancer research after receiving financial support from the TEPHINET/TFGH, including mentoring from senior cancer scientists working at NHI/NCI and personally Dr. Maria Leon from IARC and Addis Ababa University, School of Public Health. For that investigation, I revised and abstracted 4 years of medical records on each esophageal cancer patient attending the Tikur Anbessa Hospital in Addis Ababa between 2013 and 2016 which allowed me to describe the esophageal cancer patient population seeking care at this tertiary hospital. In addition, in the most recently identified newly diagnosed cancer patients a risk factor questionnaire was administered as well as in a group of matched controls from the same geographical area of residence as the cases, who were visited at their residence to complete the questionnaire. I have concluded the analyses of these data and drafted two manuscripts for publication. I had currently developed key messages in local languages to create awareness of the community on the unhealthy feeding habit (too hot porridge, coffee, tea etc.) and well established risk factors of EC. These messages will be displayed in health facilities in Oromia. My previous research experience, the IARC Cancer Summer Course training, my motivation to work more on the study of Public Health important diseases a like cancer offer me the conditions to take full-advantage of the cancer fellowship and study, which will enable immediate application of the research plan and dissemination of the skill acquired during the fellowship. Should I attend this fellowship program at IARC, I would like to learn about advanced studies on cancer epidemiology from various sections and multidisciplinary scientists which will equip me to fulfill my future vision to join PhD program and project work on Cancer Epidemiology within a short period of time. Currently I am a public health emergency management and health research senior officer in Oromia region; a regional state comprising 1/3rd of the country. Among various activities implemented in the process team, one is regularly conducting epidemiologic studies on major public health important disease. I also conducts; surveillance and follow trends of public health problems in the community, outbreak investigations and control, developing health guidelines, reviewing research protocols, providing mentorship and guidance for Field epidemiology residents and conducting training for health professionals as one of the expert in the department. I am very interested in conducting cancer research study projects; especially Gastro-esophageal cancer in Africa, in which I had prior areas of research study in Ethiopia. Therefore, in a few years, I see myself as a scientist on public health important diseases; cancer epidemiology contributing to prevention and control of the disease burden from our community and also have some impact on the Cancer science.
